Tariq Trotter, known to Hip Hop fans as Black Thought of the world famous Roots crew, can almost always be seen sporting sunglasses. Although he’s not new to the fashion business, the veteran emcee has ventured into eyewear, partnering with Moscot for the design of their limited edition Black Tortoise Grunya frames, gold stamped with his signature.
But this is no ordinary launch, as 100% of the proceeds for the glasses will go to Trotter’s GrassROOTS Community Foundation, which he runs with co-founder Dr. Janice Johnson Dias, and The Moscot Mobileyes Foundation.
With only 300 numbered pairs being produced, the frame has double laminate combination Black Tortoise acetate, and brown glass gradient sun lenses with an anti-reflective backside for reduced glare.
The first 100 people who pre-order the exclusive Gunya frames will be treated to an exclusive live show with Black Thought at the Moscot Gallery and Music Space in New York on February 12, 2015, the day of the product release. And if you know anything about The Roots, then you know the performance will be chock-full of surprise guest appearances.
Attendees will also get a raffle ticket for the chance to win two tickets to a live taping of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, as well as a private VIP meet & greet with Black Thought.
Trotter spoke on the special collaboration in a press release: “Working with Moscot to create this handsome frame has been a really special experience. Not only is this frame a reflection of my own style, inside and out, but the ability to help sustain the important work these two foundations do is what makes this conscious collaboration really matter. I’m excited for our fans to be a part of it.”
