I have to admit, as many times as I had watched the trailers for Edge of Tomorrow, I was completely confused about what was about to happen as I settled in for an IMAX 3D viewing. I asked myself if this was about to be Groundhog Day on acid… or some kind of Terminator-esque time-bending rehash… or maybe just a kickass, crafty Tom Cruise movie with a lot of explosions. Within the first 20 minutes of the movie, the answer was clear… Edge of Tomorrow is all of these things and more.
Unlike some action flicks where you are forced to sit through tons of back story and halfwit dialogue between characters, Edge of Tomorrow moves faster than you’d expect. The pace is rapid, frenetic even, from the first scene. The barrage of activity leaves the audience in much of the same confusion that Tom Cruise’s aptly named Major Cage is experiencing before our eyes. And then the story reveals itself, bit by bit, in a way that has the viewer as equally vested as the heroes in figuring out the next appropriate move to save the world.
Co-star Emily Blunt portrays the badass Special Forces soldier Rita Vrataski with enough energy to match Cruise’s OG action skill set, but just enough vulnerability to help us see why he inevitably falls for her. Not a spoiler, you know there is no Tom Cruise without some romance.
Special effects in Edge of Tomorrow are off the chain… enough to keep you at the edge of your seat in anticipation. The alien being(s) are as oddly beautiful as they are horrifying, and not easy to kill given their speed, power and sheer numbers. Knowing your heroes are going to die over and over and over again leads to an exhausting, nail-biting anxiety… it’s a pain so fun that you will not want to get up during this movie, so use your pre-show time wisely!
Edge of Tomorrow also stars Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson, Noah Taylor, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riley, Jonas Armstrong, Franz Drameh, Masayoshi Haneda and Tony Way, and is skillfully directed by Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Bourne Identity).

Synopsis from Warner Bros.: The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
