Here is the full trailer for the 2012 remake of Sparkle, which very sadly marks Whitney Houston‘s final big screen role. Fortunately, we do get to experience Whitney’s incredible voice in this tale of three sisters from Harlem, New York who struggle to make the big time as singers.
American Idol champion Jordin Sparks stars in her first major role as Sparkle, alongside British actress Carmen Ejogo (Pride and Glory, The Brave One) as the troubled Sister, and Tika Sumpter (Gossip Girl, Think Like a Man) as Delores.
Male stars in the film include Derek Luke, Omari Hardwick, Mike Epps, Cee-Lo Green, and veteran actors Michael Beach (ER, Waiting to Exhale) and Curtis Armstrong (Ray, Revenge of the Nerds). Terrence Jenkins aka Terrence J from BET’s 106 & Park also makes an appearance.
Sparkle is directed by Salim Akil (Girlfriends, Jumping the Broom). His wife, writer/producer Mara Brock Akil (Girlfriends, Cougar Town) is responsible for updates on the screenplay along with original co-writer Howard Rosenman.
As you may know, the Akils also write and direct the television series The Game, which has featured appearances from Tika Sumpter, Michael Beach, Curtis Armstrong and Terrence J over the course of five seasons. Additionally, Beach co-starred with Whitney Houston in the classic relationship movie Waiting to Exhale, and there are probably several more close degrees of separation with this cast if you really look into it.
That said, I’ll be expecting some tight on-screen chemistry with this film! Watch the Sparkle trailer below and let us know if you’ll be hitting theaters this Summer!
