Michael Jackson fans swarmed to Prospect Park in Brooklyn on Sunday, August 29 to celebrate the 52nd birthday of the late King of Pop. The second annual event was sponsored by Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks and The Republic of Brooklyn.
Hosted by Spike Lee, Rev. Al Sharpton, Idris Elba and Brooklyn Borough President Marky Markiwitz, the birthday tribute was set to music by DJ Spinna in the park’s Nethermead Meadow.
Thousands of people gathered to hear all the MJ classics, reminisce and dance the afternoon away, even in mid-90 degree weather! UrbLife.com was on the scene and saw everything from MJ impersonators to babies showing love and respect for Jackson’s legacy.
Nyjera Pierson was at event with a girlfriend and expressed, “ This day is amazing! I love him so much and am so impacted by is music and his work for humanity.” So I had to ask her if she, like me, thought she was going to marry him when she grew up. Of course she said, “Yes, and I’m still in love with him!”
Jamila Oyo helped her children and nephew dress up like characters from Michael Jackson’s classic 1978 movie The Wiz. “He’s a legend who inspires from the young to the old – from babies to someone 99-years-old. That’s just Mike!” Jamila told us.
The crowd, the love, and surprise performances from Snoop Dogg and Warren G made the day one that people won’t soon forget. Can’t wait for next year!
Check out the energy in these videos from people who attended on Sunday, including one from our friends at TheUrbanDaily.com with impersonators, dancing and actors Jamie Hector and Chad Coleman!
