Once labeled as slackers, rebels, and misguided youth, in 2010 and beyond we are finding out what happens as Gen-Xers approach middle-age. Along these lines, Harvard-educated journalist/producer Andrea Blaugrund Nevins has taken on punk rockers in a new light with her documentary The Other F Word.
The film, which earned critical praise at SXSW 2011, spotlights a number of musicians and extreme sports stars who have spent most of their lives going against the grain. Now, these fathers are forced to address censorship, questionable life decisions and outside influences on their offspring.
The great majority of once degenerate dads are textbook Gen-Xers, including Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers (who gets very emotional in some clips), Mark Hoppus of Blink 182, pro skater Tony Hawk, Art Alexakis of Everclear, Lars Frederiksen and Matt Freeman of Rancid, Jim Lindberg of Pennywise, Rob Chaos of Total Chaos, Fat Mike of NOFX, Tim McIlrath of Rise Against, famed drummer John Freese (Guns N Roses, Devo, Nine Inch Nails) and pro BMX rider Rick Thorne.
Incidentally, former Pennywise front man Jim Lindberg also penned his own book entitled Punk Rock Dad: No Rules, Just Real Life, which fans of The Other F Word might enjoy.
