Detroit, Michigan started out as an enigma to me. Prior to my recent trip, the main hits that popped up in my Google search were limited to the downfall of the local economy. Despite the obvious, Detroit is a cultural gem fighting to make a comeback. My purpose there was to discover what some have dismissed as lost.
With close to a million residents, I had to ask myself, was it really “lost” or just in need of encouragement and support? Detroit, now known as “The Comeback City”, will surprise you as it did me!
What to Eat
Michael Symon’s Roast Steakhouse (1128 Washington Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226)
American Food on a fantastic voyage is the best way to describe the menu here. If you are a meat and potatoes type of person then this eatery is perfect for you, as they do American food exceptionally well.
Although they are best known for their steaks, I went for the Jerk Spiced Pork Belly, as that it my current “it” cut of meat. There are other items on the menu to choose from, such as their Lobster Spaghetti, Short Ribs, and Roasted Marrow with capers and chilies, to name a few.
Where to Sleep
I received the best night’s sleep of my life at one of the world’s tallest hotels: Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center (400 Renaissance Drive, Detroit, Michigan 48243). Located just a stone’s throw from the General Motor’s world headquarters, this hotel provides all of your business needs with a numerous meeting rooms, restaurants, and again, the most comfortable bed you will ever lay your head on.
In addition, the Detroit People Mover makes a stop on the lower level of the hotel, which came in handy when it came time to head to the Detroit Lions game.
Where to Go
Adults:
Who knew Detroit was a gambling destination? With three major casinos in tow (MGM Grand, MotorCity, and Greektown), it reminds me of a mini Atlantic City.
As a tip for the social media savvy, be sure to check in when entering. You will find that the properties like to engage with guest via Twitter and Four Square. I found that small gesture of friendliness refreshing, as most businesses don’t understand the concept of added customer service through the social sphere.
Kids:
The Detroit Zoo is a must see for the kids. It is located just outside of downtown in Royal Oak, which is about a 20-30 minute drive. Both the children and adults in your group will enjoying exploring the property, with the option to see over 2,500 animals and 280 species.
The mission of the Detroit Zoo is to celebrate and save wildlife. My favorite experience was seeing the baby animals; they were so cute! If you like activities where you learn while having fun, the Detroit Zoo is for you.
